There’s something for all ages at First!

The Nest is First Church’s Children’s Ministry for infants through 6th-grade children. From Sunday School to music groups to church-wide events, we are adamant about including children in all aspects of our church’s life so that our youngest members can worship, learn, and grow into a relationship with Christ.

The Nest is located in the Education Building to the right of the Sanctuary.

Meet the Director of Children & Family Programming

Lovingly referred to as Mrs. Myers, Kim Myers brings the FUN to First! From engaging Sunday School lessons to themed parties to surprises during her Moment for All Ages sermon in worship, there is no shortage of ways she finds to help draw children near to Jesus.

Mrs. Myers is also the Director of Child Enrichment Preschool, a ministry of First UMC, and under her 15-year leadership, CE has become one of the most sought-after preschool programs in the city.

Children in Worship

Children of all ages are always welcome in worship! Rocking chairs are available in the back of the Sanctuary, as well.

Following the “Moment for All Ages” during the 11:00 Traditional Service, children 4 and under are invited to be dismissed with the Director of Children & Family Programming to be picked up in Room 113 of the Education building following the service. Children 5+ are invited to dismiss with the group to join the M&M’s Children’s Choir practice and can be picked up following service in room 205 of the Education building.

For those who choose to remain in the service, Bird Boxes are available to help engage them in worship with fun activities, fidget toys, coloring pages, and a Children’s bulletin.

Our nursery is open from 9:45-12:15 each Sunday for infants through age 4 in Room 113 of the Education building. It is staffed by paid and qualified caregivers and volunteers who provide consistent and loving care for your children in a kid-friendly, safe atmosphere.

Nursery

Available for children ages 5 through 6th grade from 10:00-10:45 on the 2nd floor of the Education building.

The Nest hosts several fun seasonal activities like The Super Cereal Bowl, family worship kit activities, quarterly Family Game Nights, the Easter Car Hop, the Night of Joy celebration of music and lights each Advent, and more.

Children’s Sunday School

Flight 56

Co-led by Kim Myers (Director of Children & Family Programming) and JJ Gibbs (Director of Youth Ministries), this ministry for 5th and 6th graders meets monthly to enjoy time in fun and fellowship all while exploring God's word!

The M&M’s Music Ministers Children’s Choir

Led by FUMC Director of Handbells & Children’s Music Ministries, Sonja Tomlinson, all children aged 5 and up are invited to join in the Children's Choir Room (room 206 on the 2nd floor of the Education Building) from 11:30 to 12:00 (following the 11:00 service’s “Moment for All Ages”, the group dismisses together for practice). During their time together, the group will learn to sing, read music, play the handbells, and will perform in Sunday services throughout the year! Safe Sanctuaries Policy

The Safe Sanctuaries ministry within the United Methodist Church equips and enables churches to be a welcoming and safe place for all children, youth, and adults. Safe Sanctuaries reduce the likelihood of child abuse occurring within our ministry setting and aid in protecting our adult leaders against false allegations. First has adopted our own Safe Sanctuary policies to keep our children and adults safe while here at church.  The policy applies to all employees, volunteers, and any outside groups that may use our facility.

Let’s stay in touch.
